Sliding Gates on Restricted Runs
A sliding gate travels parallel to the opening rather than through an arc, which removes the clearance problem entirely and handles a driveway that rises from the street as a bonus. What it needs instead is a clear run alongside for the leaf to move into, roughly the width of the opening again. On a narrow lot that run is often partly occupied, so the first measurement we take is not the gap but what sits beside it.
Telescopic Gates Where the Run Is Short
Where the full run is genuinely not available, a telescopic gate stacks two or three shorter leaves that travel together and nest as they go, covering a wide opening from a run-back far shorter than a single leaf would need. It costs more in hardware and carries more moving parts to maintain, and it is worth every bit of that where the alternative is a gate that cannot be fitted at all. We propose it when the geometry demands it rather than as a default.
Bi-Parting Gates From Both Sides
Splitting the opening and sliding from both ends halves the run required at each side, which suits exactly the constrained geometry common here and has the additional benefit of halving the weight each operator has to move. It does mean two operators, two sets of sensing and two runs of cabling, so we are clear about the cost before proposing it. Where a property has a little room on both sides but not much on either, it is frequently the only workable answer.
Vertical Pivot and Lift Gates
Where there is no usable run in either direction but there is headroom above the opening, a vertical pivot gate lifts clear rather than traveling sideways. It is an unusual specification on residential property and a normal one on constrained commercial sites, and it solves a problem nothing else solves. The trade is a more visible mechanism and a taller structure at the opening, which not every frontage will accept.

Building on a Confined Site
What the Gate Is Actually Fixed To
Where buildings sit this close together, a gate frequently has to anchor into a neighboring wall, a shared boundary or a structure nobody has established ownership of. We determine what a gate is genuinely fixing to before fabrication, and whether that structure will carry a cantilevered load at all. Anchoring a heavy leaf into somebody else’s wall, or into block work that was never built for it, is an expensive problem to unwind once the concrete has set.
Getting a Finished Gate to Its Opening
Installing on a narrow lot is a logistics problem as much as a fabrication one, because there may be no route to bring a fully assembled leaf to where it is going. We plan that before building, fabricating in sections for final assembly on site where access requires it, rather than discovering at delivery that a completed gate cannot physically reach the opening it was measured for.
Ground Clearance in a Tight Gap
Where a gate runs between two structures with little room either side, clearance underneath matters more than usual because there is nowhere for debris to be pushed aside as the leaf travels. We set clearance so the gate runs clean over the surface it crosses, and on sliding installations we keep the track or cantilever path clear of the pinch points a confined site inevitably creates.
Staging Work Where Access Is Single
On a property whose only vehicle access is the gate being replaced, sequence is most of the job. We prepare and finish off site so the disruptive on-site phase is short, stage the work so the opening is never left unsecured overnight, and state clearly which periods access will be restricted. On a dense street with no alternative parking, that planning is what separates a straightforward job from a week of difficulty.

Security Doors and Window Guards
Ornamental security doors and window guards are a large share of the residential work here. The requirement is a barrier that belongs to the building rather than one applied across it, so we fabricate to the opening and match picket and scroll detail to what is already present. Where a wall is stucco over frame rather than solid masonry, fixings go into structure rather than render, since anchorage driven into render alone pulls out under load.
Pedestrian and Rear Gates
The pedestrian gate is usually the most-used opening on a compact property and wears fastest, particularly where it is the only route to a rear yard. Where a gate must not be left standing open, self-closing hinges are sized to the actual leaf weight rather than fitted generically, because a closer specified for a light gate and hung on a heavy one moves it most of the way and leaves it against a latch that never engages.
Repairing Rather Than Replacing
An older gate with a corroded bottom rail or worn hinges is very often worth keeping, since the frame and any ornamental detail above it are usually sound. We cut out the failed steel, weld in new tube matched to the original section, re-hang on properly sized hinges and refinish so the repair does not read as a patch. On a tight site, repairing in place also avoids the access problem that replacement would create.
Automation Where Space Is Limited
A confined installation restricts where an operator can physically sit, and mounting one awkwardly to make it fit is how a gate acquires a permanent fault. We size the unit to the real leaf weight and cycle count, place it where it can be serviced without dismantling something else, and route cabling where a vehicle passing close on a narrow driveway will not damage it.

Where properties sit this close, boundaries are shared in practice even where they are separate on paper, and a gate installation frequently affects a neighbor as much as the owner. The compact street grid that came with that density also means short distances, so a service call anywhere in the city is minutes from anywhere else. Aluminum Where Weight Is the Enemy
On a constrained site the posts available are frequently the ones already there, and their capacity is fixed. Aluminum extrusion spans the same opening for a fraction of the weight of steel, which keeps a heavier gate within what an existing post and footing can carry and reduces load on hinges and operator alike. It marks more easily than steel, so we specify heavier wall sections wherever vehicles maneuver close on a narrow driveway.
Steel Where Security Leads
Where the gate is primarily a security barrier rather than an entrance feature, steel remains the right answer for its resistance to impact and forcing. We build with proper section and concealed diagonal bracing so the leaf holds square, since a gate that flexes when pushed will rack over time and eventually stop latching, which defeats the security it was installed for in the first place.
Finishes for Close Quarters
Where a gate passes within inches of a wall, the finish takes contact it would never see on an open frontage, and a coating that chips at the edge will start corroding there first. Welds get zinc-rich primer before anything else, with galvanizing or a powder coat above, and we pay particular attention to edges and corners that will be brushed by masonry every time the gate travels.
Matching Gates Along a Shared Boundary
Where a gate sits on a boundary shared with a neighbor, the finished result is visually part of both properties whether either owner intended that or not. We take account of what is already there, matching height and keeping proportion compatible while keeping detail specific to the property.
